THE AMISTAD SLAVE REVOLT ANNIVERSARY

The “Amistad slave revolt” occurred on June 2, 1839. Slaves being transported on the Spanish ship Amistad overwhelmed the crew and seized control, ordering the navigator to sail them back to their home in what is now Sierra Leone. After being recaptured off the shores of Connecticut and held for trial, the 35 survivors of the rebellion successfully returned to their homeland.
