STEVE BANNON CALLS FOR SHOCK TROOPS

This week’s history began when Steve Bannon emerged from court with a brace of contempt of Congress convictions, only to invoke his eidolon Gregor Strasser by calling for shock troops to “deconstruct” the existing government “brick by brick.” Bannon’s Monday “War Room” podcast had him explaining: “This is taking on and defeating and deconstructing the administrative state.”

Shock troops –originally Stoßtruppen– were German special forces formed at the end of WWI. The name was soon used interchangeably with Storm troops (Sturmtruppen). At liberty after the war, these re-grouped as the deadly paramilitary Freikorps, until consolidation with the Nazi party in 1920 saw them fighting under the name Sturmbataillon, then Sturmabteilung (SA). Gregor Strasser was a founder of this horde of berzerkers, aided by his lieutenant Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Göring, and Ernst Röhm. Despite, or because of, their national movement-building prowess, Strasser and Röhm were assassinated in the 1934 Night of the Long Knives (Nacht der langen Messer) by the now omnipotent Hitler’s new SS, SD, and Gestapo. [SS = Schutzstaffel (Protection Squadron); SD = Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service of the Reichsführer-SS); Gestapo = Geheime Staatspolizei (Secret State Police)]. And their SA was wiped out. Some people never learn.
