Megastar Alla Pugacheva, probably the most famous woman in Russia, has publicly called for an “end to the death of our boys for illusory aims.” Avoiding the word “war,” Pugacheva on Sunday told her 3.5 million Instagram followers that she wished to be included on Russia’s list of ‘foreign agents’ along with her husband, the famous TV comedian Maxim Galkin. He had spoken out against the Russian war on Ukraine since it began, and continued to do so, including Putin’s name in his remarks, and the couple left Russia in February. Last week, the Moscow newspaper Novayagezta revealed that the Russian Ministry of Justice had placed Galkin in its registry of foreign agents.
The designation ‘foreign agent’ is a senescent Soviet-era way of criminalizing persons who speak or act in any manner which displeases the ruling caste. Pugacheva who had returned to Russia for the funeral of Mikhail Gorbachev, wrote in her Instagram: “I request to be added to the ranks of foreign agents of my beloved country. I am in solidarity with my husband, an honest, respectable, and genuine person who is a true and incorruptible patriot of Russia, who wishes his Motherland prosperity, peaceful life, freedom of speech, and the end of the death of our boys for illusory goals that are turning our country into a pariah and worsening the lives of our citizens.”
Famous since 1965 as a songstress, actress and the undisputed queen of Russian pop culture, Pugacheva has been personally feted by Gorbachev, Yeltsin and Putin. She has been awarded such honors as People’s Artist of the USSR, People’s Artist of the RSFSR, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, three separate Orders of Merit for the Fatherland, and Accomplished Artist of the Russian SFSR,
Putin had Roskomnadzor, the country’s media regulator, block Instagram throughout Russia as early as March 11, but determined citizens continue to use VPNs to evade geoblocking, From that point, popular news floods out across other media.
