Explicitly violent videos promoting the Russian Wagner mercenary group are currently flooding TikTok, reaching hundreds of thousands of users and up to more than one billion views.

The calculation was compiled by NewsGuard, an American-based company which rates online content based on transparency and/or disinformation, although NewsGuard itself has had its own irregular past inaccuracies. As of this writing, 160 clips NewsGuard analysts discovered circulating on TikTok showed violent actions conducted by the Wagner Group, including the October sledgehammer execution of Yevgeny Nuzhin, a convicted Russian murderer recruited from prison by Wagner, who had surrendered to Ukraine before somehow winding up back in Russia, most probably in a botched POW exchange.

TikTok, owned by ByteDance, a Chinese internet conglomerate partially owned by the Chinese government –yet perversely blocked within China– has said that it will act against any content that violates its policies.
