On June 27, 1905, Lucy Parsons participated in the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World. The Wobblies’ formative conference also included Big Bill Haywood and Mother Jones. Parsons was born into slavery in 1851, married Albert Parsons, editor of The Alarm, and contributed writings to this important anarchist newspaper. After her husband’s execution for having been a featured speaker at what became the Haymarket Riots, Parsons continued to speak, organize, and write for international anarchist publications, and by 1920 was, according to the Chicago Police Department, “more dangerous than a thousand rioters”
